Saciova: Past and Future

Saciova: Past and Future

One of the smallest settlements in Covasna County, with a population of around 120 people, it is a true attraction for those interested in built heritage. Situated 16 km southeast of Sfântu Gheorghe, near the village of Reci, on one of the peaks of the mountain range near Saciova, there was a castle - probably built in the 13th century and part of the border fortifications - whose remains can still be seen today. A Baroque Reformed church was built in the 18th century on the site of a small church built in the 14th century, and its wall paintings, long covered with plaster, include a battle scene from the legend of Saint Ladislaus and a fragment of a healing scene from the legend of Saint Elizabeth. The A-listed church boasts not only valuable murals but also a coffered ceiling dating from 1791 and painted furniture.
For the time being, the religious tabernacle is not used by the faithful, as the ageing structure of the building deteriorated so badly a few years ago that services had to be moved to a neighbouring village. Renovations are underway, and officials promise that by 2026 it will once again become a cornerstone of spiritual life and a special tourist attraction. A visitor centre is also planned and parts of the building will be used for children's camps.
