Did you know that:
- The first National Women's Day was celebrated in the United States of America on the last Sunday of February 1909? At the Second International Congress of Socialist Women in Copenhagen, in 1910, activist Clara Zetkin proposed that a Women's Day be celebrated every year worldwide. The date was set in 1913 for March 8 to commemorate the 1857 strike by New York textile workers – or, according to other sources, the fire that occurred on this day in a New York factory in 1908, which claimed the lives of 129 workers. Since then, International Women’s Day has been celebrated every year on March 8 and honors the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world.
- It is also a day to promote gender equality, raise awareness of women’s rights and recognize ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society? In many countries, events, conferences and community gatherings are held to celebrate women’s contributions and inspire positive change.
